The best of this trio (which is what I thought based on barrel tastings) is the 1985 Gravelly Meadow. Although there is a touch of sour milk and dirty wood in the nose, the wine possesses more fruit and ripeness, as well as an elegant, medium-bodied personality. The tannin is excessive, but it is better integrated than in either the Red Rock Terrace or Volcanic Hill. The hard, tough finish suggests the fruit will fade before the tannin melts away.
